Innovation & Research - BEEclipse
A total eclipse of the sun that spanned the USA from Texas to Maine occurred on April 8th, 2024. We saw this as an opportunity to engage citizen scientists to collect some truly unique honey bee behavioral data. With the help of our beekeeping community, we have created a dataset that is now being analyzed by our research team.
The BEEclipse project utilized hive monitoring devices produced by BroodMinder to observe the impact that a total solar eclipse would have on bees and their behaviors. 150 participants were sent special monitoring devices known as BeeDars that recorded data from hives along the path of totality.
